Three Food Rules
Michael Pollan's rules for a Good Diet (from In Defense Of Food): Eat Food. Not too much. Mostly plants.
Eat Food: "real" food - reduce Processed Food/packaged food
Not too much: Americans, in particular, eat over-large portions.
Mostly plants: Americans, in particular, should eat more fruits and vegetables.
David Katz agrees: Viewed from that altitude, the similarities of dietary patterns associated with good health are far more noteworthy than their differences. Judicious versions of Asian, vegan, vegetarian, Mediterranean, low glycemic, Paleo diets and more exert their shared benefits by virtue of their shared features, reasonably summarized as: real food, not too much, mostly plants. None prominently features meat or butter despite the current clamoring on that topic; none features highly processed refined carbohydrates or added sugars, either.
