Aldous Huxley
Known for his Brave New World, which seems to me his most simplistic book.
I can definitely recommend Island, Point Counter Point, and Doors Of Perception (about his use of hallucinogens).
But overall his work has a bit of the empty feeling of, say, the existentialists. I think Colin Wilson might have noted this, but I can't find a reference.
