You Would Rather Endure Small Electric Shocks Than Sit Alone With Your Thoughts, Study Finds. In 11 studies, we found that participants typically did not enjoy spending 6 to 15 minutes in a room by themselves with nothing to do but think, that they enjoyed doing mundane external activities much more, and that many preferred to administer electric shocks to themselves instead of being left alone with their thoughts. David Chapman: What they don’t teach you at STEM school. What they do teach you at STEM school is how to think and act within rational systems. What they mostly don’t teach you is how to evaluate, choose, combine, modify, discover, or create systems. (systems thinking) (more)

Scott Alexander: A Cyclic Theory Of Subcultures. David Chapman’s (2015-05-29) Chapman Geeks MOPs And Sociopaths In Subculture Evolution is rightfully a classic, but it doesn’t match my own experience. Either through good luck or poor observational skills, I’ve never seen a lot of sociopath takeovers. Instead, I’ve seen a gradual process of declining asabiyyah (more)

Rival Voices Tweet: LessWrong is structurallly analytic, you see? It suffers from the same problems which is why it leads to meaninglessness. Now, TPOT is littered with post-rats, ex-rationalists from LessWrong, that reached stage 4.5 (more)

David Chapman on Countercultures: modernity’s last gasp. The countercultural mode of the 1960s-80s marked the final attempts to rescue the glory of systems from the maw of nihilistic collapse. It failed, and we live in its wreckage. (more)
